A SURGEON with Fuyong People’s Hospital and his wife have been missing since May 8, after borrowing approximately 35 million yuan (US$5 million) from his friends and hospital colleagues.
Wei Jianxiong, the surgeon, was director of the hospital’s brain surgery department. He has been borrowing money for the past two years at an interest rate of 2 percent a month, the Southern Metropolis Daily said yesterday.
Wei has been working with the Fuyong hospital for more than 10 years. The hospital confirmed he had not come to work for a week.
He had apparently borrowed money to plough into “lucrative investments,” the paper said.
His creditors received 2 percent interest each month, 11 months a year. Wei did not pay interest for the three golden week holidays, namely, the Spring Festival, May Day, and National Day holidays, the paper quoted his creditors as saying. He has also given them IOUs as evidence of the loans.
