I DECIDED to come to Shenzhen in 2000 after I saw an advertisement in the New Zealand Herald, a leading newspaper in New Zealand, offering a teaching opportunity in Nanshan.
But when I came here, I found I was in a city I knew almost nothing about, and instinctively, I went down the street to the newsstand to find something in English that could help me.
That was my first encounter with the Shenzhen Daily, which has helped me a lot in my seven years in the city.
At the beginning, I didn’t find much informative news about Shenzhen, but now, I am a regular reader and I find the newspaper has greatly improved.
In my apartment I still have the Shenzhen Daily of Nov. 14, 2004, when the city marked its 20th anniversary and the then President Jiang Zemin unveiled the statue of the former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping at Lotus Hill Park.
