Tokyo gallery + BTAP
Tokyo Gallery, the first contemporary art gallery of its kind in Tokyo, was founded in 1950. Located in Tokyo’s Ginza district, the gallery celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2010. From its inception, the gallery’s core operations centered on the works of modern Japanese figurative painters such as Chōkai Seiji (1956), Yorozu Tetsugorō (1957) and Kayama Matazō. In 1958, following a recommendation by art critic Takiguchi Shūzō, the gallery was host to an exhibition by Saito Yoshishige. In the 1960’s, the gallery was a forerunner in introducing a series of Western avant-garde artists to Japanese audiences, among whom Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Jackson Pollock and Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Meanwhile it was also instrumental in supporting experimental projects by now internationally-renowned Japanese artists, including Takamatsu Jirō, Shiraga Kazuo, Okamoto Tarō and members of the Mono-ha movement. Tokyo Gallery introduced their artworks to international audiences through art fairs, collaborations in biennales and acclaimed exhibitions at major museums.
In the 1970’s, the gallery began working with Korean artists such as Kim Whangki, Lee Ufan, Kim Tschang-Yeul and Park Seo-Bo. From the 1980’s onward, it also began exhibiting hitherto unknown Chinese artists including Xu Bing and Cai Guoqiang, thus taking on the role of signaling beacon for Asian contemporary art with a focus on China, Japan and Korea. In 2002, the gallery opened a new space named BTAP in the now world-renowned Beijing 798 Art District, marking the establishment of Tokyo Gallery + BTAP. Under its new moniker, the gallery’s Beijing location organized a series of experimental exhibitions from the 1990’s onward, actively spreading Chinese contemporary art to the world via such large-scale academic exhibition projects as Beijing “UKIYOE”, Prayer Beads and Brush Strokes and What is Mono-ha?. In so doing, it left a positive impact on the Chinese contemporary art world, allowing it to further its mission of discovering and promoting both established and emerging artists. In recent years, exhibition planning at Tokyo Gallery + BTAP has primarily revolved around an exhibition series themed around the notion of Neo-Mōrōism. This [Neo-Mōrōism] project aims to integrate the unique experience of East Asian modernity and explore the possibilities of art, while striving to establish an underlying aesthetic vision.
TABATA Yukihito Tokyo Gallery + BTAP Director
Born in 1950, Yukihito Tabata, second son of the founder of the first generation art gallery Tokyo Gallery, Takashi Yamamoto, is of the same age as the gallery. He became associated with artists since childhood, and this experience cultivated his aesthetics and an open attitude to things. Since high school, he became fascinated with Euro-American contemporary art, and since 1970s, he became interested in Chinese traditional arts.
Tabata officially began his career at Tokyo Gallery in 1973 in charge of contemporary Korean art, and in 1975, he helped realise the first exhibition of contemporary Korean art in Japan “ Five Hinsek ‘White’5 Korean Artists‘5” (participating artists include Kwon Young-Woo, Park Seo-bo, Suh Seung-Won, Hur Hwang, and Lee Dong-Youb). He remained committed to contemporary Korean art, successively holding solo exhibitions for the artists ... . Through this undertaking, he wholeheartedly felt the importance of Asia and the profound charm of Asian culture.
Tabata first visited China in February 1989, visiting the “89 Modern Art Exhibiton” and making acquaintance with artists like Xu Bing, which made him feel the power of Chinese contemporary art. Since then, he started engaging with Chinese artists, reassured of the importance of Chinese contemporary art in the future. Tabata held the first exhibition of Chinese contemporary art in Japan “Chinese contemporary art ‘Now’”. Thereafter, he officially began advocating for Chinese contemporary art. Around 1990s, he held exhibitions in Japan for Xu Bing, Cai Guoqiang, Huang Rui, Liu Wei, the 15th and 20th anniversaries for the Stars Group.
Tabata began searching for a gallery space in China since the 21st century. In 2002, introduced by the artist Huang Rui, he set up the BTAP space in 798 Beijing, and in October the same year, he held the first exhibition there “Ukiyo-e of Beijing” which was curated by Feng Boyi. Since then, the space held 6-8 exhibitions each year with the aim to promote Chinese contemporary art, launching iconic exhibitions such as “Rosary Beads and Brush Strokes", “Casting”, “Wast Not”, and “What is Mono-ha?“. In 2012, determined to uncover cultures belonging to the Chinese context, Yukihito Tabata put forward the concept of "Neo-Mōrōism" and began the curation of the large scale international exhibition “Neo- Mōrōism”. The exhibition has by now welcomed its 8th round, and Tabata will continue his exploration in this area.
